Having to pretend that I know nothing of my sister’s condition since she hardly knows herself since dad and mum both agree that it’s the best thing to do is to medicate her but without her knowing… No wonder she is a big of a rollercoaster lately, I haven’t given her the medication she needs, but how can I give it to her without her knowing? Maybe mum or dad has kept a stash of already made drinks and has put the doses of medication in them?
I got up from the ground and looked around the kitchen cupboards and drawers.
No sign of anything not even the medication box.
What am I going to do? If my sister has such a condition that could be so dangerous without her being aware then there has to be something I have to do to prevent whatever comes next.
I glanced over at the kitchen clock and it was already 2:30pm, Cynthia would be on the bus ride back to home. I better just act like dad never rang at all and pretend that everything is normal and that my sister is normal, I mean she is still normal. Right?
*
Cynthia walked in with her bag on only one of her shoulders, with her violin case in the carrying it with her right hand, look tired and puffed out.
‘Hey Ben!’ Cynthia yelled cheerfully out with a big smile on her face, you could tell she was faking it.
‘Hey Cynth, How was school?’ I asked with a smile, clearing thoughts of what happened earlier hoping she doesn’t have any ‘mind reading ‘ abilities or such.
‘Yeah school was good, had to do a math test, I don’t think I did so well’ Cynthia replied with a huge sigh.
‘But other than the test everything was ay ok!’ Cynthia said with another fake smile and then slouched over, with her head down walking slowly to her room, chucking her violin on her bed and dropping her school bag on the ground, closing her bedroom door behind her.
I have no idea what happened with her today at school, is she getting bullied? Did she have a bad day? Should I go talk to her about this? Or should I just leave it?
I decided to just let her be; I proceeded to my room to do some study before Mat came over after
Uni. I sat on my bed with the two books that I borrowed from the library last time I was at Uni.
First was Chemistry, since I have a bit of trouble of that class even though I enjoy it. I opened up to the last time I had the book open and memorized some notes in a spare note pad I had, scribble chemistry equations and re-writing the notes from the book onto the note pad page. Never took an eye off the book or the note pad.
Never noticed how much time flew until I heard the doorbell ring. I quickly got up and walked fast to the door, looked through the eye piece just to check if it was Mat, and of course it was. I unlocked the door and let him in.
‘Hey Ben! So good to see you, Classes have been pretty lonely and boring without you’ Mat said happily.
It’s nice to have someone to be happy to see me.
‘Hey Mat! It’s good to see you too!’ I smiled
‘-oh come on in’ I quickly added as I realized he was still standing outside the door.
‘Thank you’ He smiled
one thing about Mat is that he is very polite but also very humble.
I walked with him to the lounge room and gave him a seat and sat in the one seater lounge across from him.
‘Did you walk here from uni?’ I asked looking closely at him seeing his face shine
‘Oh yes I did-‘He said politely
‘Why didn’t you call me? I could of picked you up?’
‘Oh no that is fine, thank you, I like walking, It is very good for you.’ He smiled
‘Oh let me just open my bag and get your work that you have missed out on’ Mat said bug eyed.
He opened his bag and started searching through it.
My dog, Rex all of a sudden appeared and got all excited and started barking at Mat.
‘Hey Rex! Down’ I pointed at rex to calm him down
Rex suddenly calmed down and sat on the floor near my feet, guarding me.
‘Don’t worry about him, He is very friendly, He does this with strangers or those he hasn’t met.’ I said
I began to pat Rex’s head, praising him for being so obedient.
‘I can see that you have trained him quite well’ Mat looked up and smiled at rex.
‘Ha-ha Yeah I guess I did’ I replied
‘Oh here is what you missed on Wednesday-‘Mat handed over a plastic sleeve of paper and notes that he has written.
‘I hope you can understand my writing, I have a tendency to write in polish sometimes even when I write in English.’
‘Oh that’s okay; If I have any trouble I will just get my sister to help me’ I replied
‘your sister can speak Polish?’ He asked wide eyed in amazement
‘Oh yeah she can, My mother is Polish and My father is American, My mother taught my sister at a young age she is almost fluent as I would call it’
‘That is good, why don’t you learn Polish? It would be better for you since you live in Poland’ He chuckled
‘Well the thing is, I just can’t Like I lack the ability to learn another language you know? I have tried and my father can’t speak it and he has tried and also been through classes for a year and still couldn’t pick it up.’
‘Oh really? Well it’s not easy learning another language, for some it comes naturally others it takes time, while some just don’t have the ability to sustain another whole new world practically in their minds, sort of like lacking the capacity and understanding.’
Mat dug through his bag again to get Thursday’s work that I missed out on and passed it over to me. ‘Thank you Mat for this’ I said
‘Oh don’t worry about it, that’s what friends do’ He replied.
‘I will go through it with you-‘Mat talked about Wednesdays lessons and gave me mini lectures about the classes as well as Thursdays.
It felt like Mat was talking for hours on end but instead it has only been 25 minutes. Mat glanced down at his watch and exclaimed
‘Oh I better go Ben! I will be late for my supper if I don’t leave right now!’ He jumped up and grabbed his back and put it over his shoulder.
I got up to excuse him out of the house when mat stopped suddenly to see that my sister was standing right in the hallway in her school uniform and looking stunned.
Oh no, not this side of her again. I automatically thought. I looked over at Mat who had the same expression on his face. I have no idea of what is going on.
‘Uh hello Miss’ Mat said quietly and smiled softly, all eyes on Cynthia
‘u-h he-hello’ Cynthia replied in the pure angelic voice she had, Cynthia and mat never took their eyes off of each other and I swear it has been five minutes already and they are still staring at each other’s eyes.
‘Uh mat don’t you have to be home before a certain time? You have dinner around six don’t you?’ I said trying to clear the silence
‘oh – uh yeah’ He replied as he jumped and quickly moved his eyes from my sister’s gaze.
‘Will you be back at uni next week Ben?’ he quickly added
‘Of course, I feel much better now’ I replied as I grabbed my work and place it on the kitchen table.
I turned around to see if Cynthia was still dazed as she was but there was no sight of her, she must have gone to her room, I thought to myself.
I walked to the front door to lead mat out.
‘See you hopefully next week’ said mat as he waved and walked a crossed the street
I waved back and then went inside and lock the door. I walked over to the kitchen table to get my stuff when all of a sudden; Cynthia crept up behind me and asked.
‘Who was that?’ Curiously
I jumped and dropped the work mat gave me on the floor.
‘That is my uni friend’ I said as I bent down to grab my fallen work.
‘What’s his name?’ She asked sweetly
‘What is with all the questions?’
‘well sorry for being curious’ Snapped Cynthia; she turned away and walked towards her bedroom again.
What is up with her and what was up with that whole staring competition going on there?

I dropped my work off to my room and wondered what to have for dinner.
I knocked on Cynthia’s door
‘hey you what do you want for tea?’ I yelled through the door
‘I don’t care’ she replied
‘well decide something then’
‘no how about you’
‘oh whatever’
Cynthia is starting to get on my nerves.
‘Well lets have some takeaway then?’
‘Ok, from where?’
‘Cynthia could you please open your door and talk to me, I am talking to you, don’t be so rude, what has gotten into you lately?’ I exclaimed
she unlocked the door and pulled it open
‘yes?’ she replied with a sigh
‘what takeaway do you want?’
‘get me whatever’ Cynthia replied in a sluggish mood
‘don’t give me that attitude, seriously what is up with you’ I snapped
I walked over to the cordless phone that was hanging from the wall and shoved it in Cynthia’s face, she grabbed it and looked at me.
‘Bloody dial whatever takeaway you want and could you order something for me as well?’
Cynthia started punching numbers into the phone, put it up against her ear and started speaking in polish.
‘I hope you weren’t saying anything nasty’ I said as she hung up the phone.
‘No, as if’
‘because of the attitude you are in’
‘I’m not in an attitude’
‘oh sure, when will the food be here?’
‘About twenty five minutes’
‘good and you are answering the door and receiving the food too’
‘why can’t you?’ she said angrily
‘oh well as you know I can’t speak bloody polish and they won’t understand me, seriously how dumb are you? Are you toying with me? You can’t be that blonde can you?’ I sneered.
I never thought I’d say this but I wish sometimes I was an only child or at least have a younger brother and not a sister, as awful as it sounds. It has only been recently where I’ve actually felt really anxious and that is never me, I am never the worried, anxious person. I am more carefree than what Cynthia is.

*

Dinner arrived and shortly after dinner the phone rang, I answered the phone, it was mum.
‘Hey mum, how are you?’ I asked with a smile in my voice
‘Oh hey Benjamin, I am good thanks, I am a bit worried about how you are going through? Everything all right at home? Is your sister okay?’ She replied with worry in her voice.
‘Oh she is okay, Home is fine and I am going well.’ I hesitated
‘Are you sure? You don’t seem so sure’
‘I am sure mum’
‘What did you have for tea ben?’
‘I had some of that place you told me about that fish and chips place. Really good stuff mum’
‘Oh really that’s good, I hope you haven’t had takeaway yesterday also ben, It is no good for you or your sister’
‘no mum We had a home cooked meal last night, I can assure you’
‘That’s good, have you being some study? How’s uni?’
‘Been studying a heap mum, today I studied for hours I think it was around 3 hours? Yesterday it was 4 and uni is good’ I lied, I haven’t been to uni for the past two days, I hate lying but if she found out she will be very disappointed in me, I just know it.
‘That’s really good, keep it up, make sure you take breaks with study too, you don’t want to fry your brain for doing too much there ben.’
I laughed ‘Of course I am’
‘Could you put your sister on for me please?’
‘Okay, I’ll go and get her’ I replied and place the phone down on the kitchen bench and got Cynthia.
‘Hey sis, mum is on the phone.’ I said as I knocked on her door.
I have never seen someone unlock and open a door so quickly before, she rang to the phone and picked it up.
It is nice to see her happy. I walked off into my room to let her talk to mum and proceeded with my studies.
